The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Explained

How to Make Money with Solar and Storage

For years, the main reason homeowners installed solar panels was to cut their monthly electricity bills. Generating your own clean power meant buying less from the grid. It was a simple, defensive strategy against rising energy costs.

But in 2026, the game has fundamentally changed. Thanks to advanced battery technology and a shift towards dynamic, smart energy tariffs, your home is no longer just a consumer of energy, it can be a micro-power station that actively generates tax-free income.

If you want to maximize your return on investment, the secret lies in blending solar panels, home battery storage, and the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) alongside the latest government funding initiatives. Here is everything you need to know about turning your roof into a revenue stream.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government-backed initiative that legally requires large UK energy suppliers to pay you for any surplus renewable electricity you export back to the National Grid.

When your solar panels generate electricity, your home uses what it needs first. If you don’t have a battery, any excess power automatically spills out onto the grid. Under the SEG, energy companies track this spill using a smart meter and pay you a set rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

The Catch with Standard SEG Tariffs

While the SEG ensures you get paid, standard fixed SEG tariffs often offer relatively low rates (typically between 5p and 12p per kWh). Meanwhile, buying electricity from the grid during peak times can cost significantly more.

If you are exporting all your premium solar energy during the day for 5p, only to buy it back at 6 PM for 30p, you are leaving a massive amount of money on the table.

This is where battery storage changes everything.

What’s Next for the SEG?

The UK government (DESNZ) has officially committed to a fresh consultation aimed at making the Smart Export Guarantee quicker, simpler, and fairer. The planned updates focus on cutting through red tape so that homeowners can get registered and paid faster, whilst ensuring energy suppliers offer fairer baseline tracking against market values. In short: the financial ecosystem around home solar generation is only getting stronger.

The Magic Formula: Blending Solar, Storage, and Smart Tariffs

When you pair your solar panels with a smart home battery system (such as a Tesla Powerwall, Duracell, or Anker SOLIX), you gain absolute control over your power. Instead of letting your excess daytime solar slip away to the grid for a low fixed rate, your battery captures it.

This unlocks a highly profitable strategy known as arbitrage through modern “Time-of-Use” tariffs (like Octopus Flux or similar agile automated tariffs).

Here is how you make money blending the two:

  • Store Low, Use High: You store your free solar power during the day and use it to power your home during the evening peak (usually between 4 PM and 7 PM), avoiding the most expensive grid electricity entirely.
  • Play the Grid Game: Many smart tariffs offer premium export rates during peak evening hours when the grid is under strain. Your battery can be programmed to automatically dump its stored power back into the grid at these precise times, earning you top-tier export payments—sometimes upwards of 25p to 30p per kWh.
  • Cheap Winter Charging: In the depths of winter when solar generation is lower, you can use your battery to “force-charge” from the grid overnight using ultra-cheap off-peak rates. You then use that cheap stored energy during the day, or export it back during peak hours for a profit.

Stacking the Incentives: Current Government Funding & Grants

To make this setup even more lucrative, the UK government has introduced a wave of grants, tax breaks, and funding frameworks designed to slash the upfront cost of equipment.

By utilizing these programs, your path to pure profit becomes much shorter.

1. 0% VAT on Solar and Battery Storage

If you are worried about high taxes, there is great news. The government applies a 0% VAT rate to energy-saving materials. Crucially, this applies to standalone battery retrofits as well as combined solar-and-storage systems.

  • The Benefit: If you already have solar panels but want to add a battery to start playing the smart export game, you can have it installed entirely tax-free. This automatically saves you 20% compared to standard home improvements. (Note: This incentive is currently scheduled to run until 31 March 2027).

2. Fully Funded Systems: ECO4

If your household income is under £36,000, or someone in your home receives means-tested benefits, you may not have to pay a single penny for your upgrade. Programs like the ECO4 scheme provide fully funded solar and battery installations for qualifying energy-inefficient properties (EPC rating D-G).

  • The Benefit: If you qualify, your installation cost is £0. However, you are still legally entitled to sign up for a SEG tariff. This means you can generate pure, unadulterated profit by selling energy back to the grid from a system you received entirely for free.

3. 100% Income Tax-Free Earnings

Many homeowners ask: “If I am making hundreds of pounds a year selling electricity back to the grid, do I need to declare it to HMRC?” The answer is no. HMRC rules state that income generated from domestic solar panel installations is completely exempt from UK Income Tax, provided the system is installed on a residential property you occupy and is sized primarily for domestic use. Every penny you earn through smart exporting is yours to keep.

Completing the Eco-System: The EV Connection

If you drive an Electric Vehicle (EV), the financial rewards multiply. You can use the OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant (which offers up to £350 for qualifying renters, flat-owners, and landlords) to help install a smart charger.

By linking an EV into your solar and battery setup, you create a closed-loop system. You can divert surplus solar straight into your car battery, or use your home battery to store cheap overnight grid energy to charge your car, ensuring your daily commute costs virtually nothing.

Ready to Turn Your Home into a Smart Power Station?

Blending solar power with battery storage is no longer just an environmental choice, it is a highly sophisticated, tax-free financial investment. By combining market-leading hardware like the Tesla Powerwall, Duracell, or Anker SOLIX with the right smart export tariff, you can effectively make the National Grid pay you.
